Having said that, WHY does the gov NEED to keep a record of who send who an email? Does the Royal Mail keep a record of who sends who a Christmas card? (Actually, thinking about it, it's probably all computerised, so possibly yes, but I would assume they would purge those records fairly regularly) Issue of email logging is not that different from website logging which already happens – isps are legally bound to keep records of all the websites we visit for years.
