Married couples will make up only 41 per cent of the over-16 population in the UK by 2031, when they will be outnumbered by divorcees, singles and cohabiting couples, the Office for National Statistics predicts. A third of 30 to 44-year-olds will be ‘un-partnered or never married’ by 2031 compared with 22 per cent today. Among 45 to 66-year-olds, 19 per cent will be single compared with 9 per cent today. Experts say that young people are not forming relationships because they are under increasing pressure. There were 231,450 marriages in 2007, 3.3 per cent fewer than the year before.
