There is nothing enlightened or progressive about abortion legislation. As well as giving absolutely no protection to the right to life of the unborn child, it does a colossal disservice to women. A recent, widely publicised peer-reviewed study from Finland, by Mika Gissler et al, found that women who had abortions were six times more likely to commit suicide compared with those who continued on with their pregnancies.

The Republic of Ireland is one of the few places in the world where abortion has not been legalized. But now the pro-abortion lobby is pushing for legislation to be approved – a Private Members´ Bill was introduced by a Socialist Party member of parliament, the “Medical Treatment Bill”, falsely creating the
impression that women in Ireland are being denied necessary medical treatments in pregnancy because of the absence of legalized abortion. On April 19, the bill was defeated.

The battle, however, is not over! The Labour Party, at their National Conference, backed a radical pro-abortion motion and an “Expert Group” is due to report on the subject, in July. If provision of medical treatment was all the Bill was intended to do then it is superfluous. Women in Ireland receive outstanding care when pregnant and Ireland, without abortion, according to the latest UN statistics on women’s healthcare, is one of the safest countries in the world for pregnant women.

PRAISE: God for the firm commitment to life in Ireland. Pray that Ireland may be an encouragement to other nations to “choose life”.
