Uzbekistan’s law severely limits all religious activities; it’s one of the most restrictive countries for religious freedom in Central Asia. But repression is not stopping a Barnabas-supported congregation from flourishing. Members have found ingenious ways to meet together while remaining under the radar of government spies,
getting together in cafes, or sharing their faith while driving together. Their pastor was a Muslim extremist with links to the Taliban before becoming a Christian, and their congregation has grown from 10 to 120. Now it is too dangerous for the church to come together as one so they meet in 19 separate home and family groups across the region. Many, too fearful of police raids and fines to attend home groups, learned the importance of
fellowship and now relish meeting in creative ways.

Dr. Hannah Gay, the paediatrician from the University of Mississippi Medical Center whose treatment “functionally cured” a baby girl born with an HIV infection, is a Christian who previously spent years living as a missionary with her husband in Ethiopia, and these days she’s cultivating the faith of third and fourth graders through the teaching of Bible passages at her church on Wednesday nights. Gay, who has four children and a grandson, is a devout Christian who puts her faith first and juggles her family and career in between. “She does not like being in the spotlight,” her 24-year-old daughter Ruth Gay Thomas told the Washington Post.

A Wycliffe Bible Translators team is translating the New Testament into one of the minority Bangladeshi languages. According to Operation World, there are 46 dialects spoken in Bangladesh, and 88% of its people groups are unreached. Over the next several months, a team of translators and consultants will revise and check the final books as the project nears completion. The team hopes to have the New Testament ready for print by fall 2013. In addition to preparing God’s Word for printing, the team is also producing Scripture-based media products for the largely oral community.

It’s not all that uncommon for an Assemblies of God church to have a visitor who was born outside of the United States. It’s a bit more uncommon if that visitor comes from a Hindu or Buddhist background. But, when a non-English-speaking Hindu visitor shows up with nearly 220 of his Hindu and Buddhist Nepalese/Bhutanese family and friends – nearly half who have never even heard of Jesus – well, that’s a God thing! Assemblies of God Pastor Chris Dawes of Valley Christian Center, in Grand Forks, North Dakota experienced just this last Christmas. He explains that 60 to 100 mostly white people attended his Sunday services, and that there didn’t seem to be a way for Valley Christian Center to reach immigrants.

Then, six days before Christmas, Dawes was asked if the church would be willing to host a Christmas Day outreach meal for Nepalese and Bhutanese refugees. He agreed and, on Christmas Day, a sea of nearly 220 new faces arrived at Valley Christian Centerfor a special service and meal. “Fifteen Hindus and Buddhists gave their lives to the Lord that day, with many more wanting to learn more about Jesus,” Dawes says. “I just really feel this was prophetic in that this happened on Christmas Day – it was like the Lord handed us a gift on a silver platter.”

Since that Christmas Day, the Nepalese believers and their guests have started meeting regularly at Valley Christian Center. Every week more people are accepting Christ as their Lord and Saviour, and Dawes is studying the Nepalese culture and language in an effort to help bridge the communities into one community. One of the greatest opportunities, Dawes says, is that his youth group of three kids now suddenly has 33 youth – with more Nepali youth coming each week. Many of these new students are still working on their conversational English, which provides an excellent opportunity for the church to speak into their lives.

However, Dawes has come to realize that there are also challenges. “These new Christians that have only recently arrived in this country do not always realize that ‘all that glitters is not gold,’ and that some elements of American culture are both unbiblical and spiritually deadly,” Dawes says. “My desire is to share the timeless truths of the Gospel with them in a way that is culturally relevant and help them effectively assimilate into the American culture while maintaining their Christianity.”

For Valley Christian Center it’s a time of wonder as they witness God working in their church in ways they never imagined. “I don’t know where this is all going to go, but I know right now, we’re supposed to work, because night is coming, and we must welcome them and reach them now with the love and Gospel message of Jesus Christ,” Dawes says.

Day 27 – PRAISE: God for a church willing to rise to God’s opportunity leading to many lives saved.

Day 28 – PRAY: That Western churches may seize the opportunity to reach immigrants as they arrive.

Civil war in Syria has led to some 70,000 deaths and hundreds of thousands of displaced refugees. Yet Jesus is at work among these people who have lost everything. One Syrian refugee saw Christ heal his daughter while in the refugee camp. This event drew him to follow Jesus. Now he is reaching out by giving sacrificially and boldly proclaiming Christ. Christians are trying to bring immediate comfort to the refugees; at the same time they long to see Syrians meet the real Jesus for the first time. They desire to see the new believers share the Gospel with other refugees and eventually take it back to their friends and family in Syria.

PRAY: That Christians may continue to show Christ’s love, and that the new believers may be discipled.”
