Christian Radio: A Light for Tanzania | 305 | Report 17

The New Year started off with a new Christian presence on the airwaves of Tanzania. Broadcasting from Mbeya, located on a mountain top (insuring no obstruction of its signal), the Gospel message is broadcast to an area that blankets southern Tanzania and many millions of its citizens. The station is the result of years of labour and the combined efforts of the Tanzanian Assemblies of God, US missionaries and Speed the Light (STL), which helped with purchasing some of the equipment and in coordinating technical advice.
“The national church carried the lion’s share of the budget,” states Tanzanian missionary Scott Hanson, “but we are all excited about the potential impact the station will have in proclaiming the Gospel and disseminating good doctrine through solid Biblical teaching.” Currently, the population of Tanzania is estimated at 39 million people, with more than 80 percent said to be living in rural areas. AG African Regional Director Mike McClaflin says that the Tanzania Assemblies of God, has one of the most aggressive evangelism and church planting programmes of any of the AG national fellowships in the world.
Meanwhile Missions Communications Director Randy Hurst says four more stations will be established in the next 10 years. Their vision is to broadcast the Gospel across the entire country within a decade, while simultaneously planting thousands of churches. “With Tanzania being one of the poorest economies in Africa, the vision and faith of this national church is astounding,” he says. With Trans World Radio (TWR) covering all of Malawi, and Christian radio spreading in Uganda
and Kenya, radio is fast becoming a powerful means of church growth in East Africa.

PRAISE: God for these initiatives to blanket East Africa with Christian radio. Pray for the Africans who have taken this step of faith, and for the broadcasts to pave the way for rapid church growth.

Amidst the ongoing anti-government protests in Thailand, the work of HCJB Global continues to make the knowledge of Christ available to South East Asia. HCJB’s Wayne Pederson says they’re now supporting a local effort to plant 100 community FM radio stations in Thailand. He said,
“This is an opportunity to evangelise Thai people, especially along the borders of Laos and Cambodia.”
A group of Thai Christian businessmen will finance the project. Thailand is known for its sex trade industry and false religions. Pederson says, “We’re just praying that those 100 radio stations thatare being planted all across Thailand would have the power not only to change individual lives but also to change the culture and empower the church.”

For years, Christian radio stations in the United Kingdom were prevented from airing nationally, but now two Christian broadcasting groups are doing just that. United Christian Broadcasters operates on nearly every continent to make Christian radio and television available even in closed countries. At the end of last year the group finally realized a 23-year vision to bring national Christian radio across the UK.
Almost simultaneously Premier Radio – that had been operating as a local station in London since 1990 – was granted a national digital license to broadcast throughout Britain. This has been an historic victory after facing major challenges since the long journey first began. UCB’s Ian Mackie said there were many times when he was ready to give up on the vision, but a significant word from the Lord kept him going.
After 23 years, Mackie’s persistence has finally paid off when he was told by Ofcom, the British radio authority, that he’d finally been granted a national digital radio license to begin Dec. 1. His story acts as an inspiration to many of what one man’s perseverance to fulfill God’s vision for his life can achieve.

The Prime Minister claimed that Britain’s values are still based on traditional religious teachings, and said it would be wrong if the devout were forced to keep their beliefs private. His comments, made in an interview with Premier Christian Radio, come amid growing concern that public sector employees are being punished for acting according to their faith. He added that faith has an important role to play in the public square, and that we need to be clear about what kind of society we want to be. “So I think the idea that you can say: What I do in my own life is privatized and I’m not going to try to suggest that these are values that can bind your society together, would be wrong,” Brown added.
